Why is brain size used to resolve species within the Hominid family only for species which are extinct?

Brain size is only one feature used to determine taxononomy. Dentition, morphology and behaviour are also considered. Not all homininds (humans, gorillas, chimps and orangs) have similar brain sizes and development. Diversity within species accounts for differences in brain-size amongst humans, and is not sufficient to justify any change in taxonomy.
